I’m not a sports fan of any kind, and luckily for me neither is my husband. I’ve tried to get our son into watching football, but when you aren’t truly a fan, it’s difficult. So, I’ve left it up to his grandfather and uncles, all of whom are Eagles fans.  They’ve tried, and he seems to be getting into it. But what did V choose as his favorite team? Well, let’s just leave it as the team that must not be named.

What happens around here when there’s an Eagles’ game on? All other activities must get postponed or stopped. Last weekend was an Indian holiday weekend and my parents were having a family dinner party. Holiday or not, the Eagles were playing so everyone was gathered around the television.

My dad is usually watching the game with a beer and snacking on pistachios or ghatiya, a deep fried Indian snack made from spices and chickpea flour. It occurred to me that roasted chickpeas would also go great with beer and make a good healthy snack too. A spiced up version would be perfect for this crowd.

Really, how can you go wrong with anything coated in garam masala and chaat masala? Garam masala literally means “hot” spice mixture and is a blend of warming spices such as peppercorns, cloves, cinnamon, cumin and cardamom. Chaat masala gives everything an instant salty tart flavor that can’t be replicated with regular salt. It gets its distinctive pungent flavor from black salt.

So the next time you are looking for an alternative to chips or nuts to snack on, try out these crunchy spicy chickpeas. They are so easy to prepare and are sure to be a hit with everyone.

I’ll definitely have V bring these chickpea snacks to the next game day gathering. It might make up for walking into a room full of Eagles fans while wearing his you know who team shirt. Well, actually, not really. I think he will just have to stand strong or convert.
