Growing up, each Sunday our large family would gather together at my grandparents house for dinner at the incredibly long table that could barely contain us all. For hours before, my grandparents would prepare the Sunday supper together. My grandfather was quite the cook and baker. I can remember watching him as he prepared everything from scratch. He especially enjoyed making freshly baked bread. Yes, those genes run deep.

My love of baking bread was something that didn’t come as naturally as it seemed for my grandfather, but my defeats of the yeasted kind only fueled my passion to conquer the feat of making bread with my own two hands. Over time I felt my frustration towards making bread turn to a feeling of enjoyment, relaxation and joy.

My grandfather most often prepared a boule of some sort for dinner. Other times as we spent time at my grandparents house, my grandfather would surprise us with a thick slice of his famous banana nut bread. As a child, I was never a fan of nuts of any kind but if they were nestled inside a loaf of that banana bread I was all over them.

When I don’t have hours to wait for loaves of bread to proof, I always look to my old pal the quick bread. Savory versions like this buttermilk bread recipe filled with cheese and fresh herbs are perfect for dinner or beside a warm bowl of soup. This orange cranberry bread is sweeter and more suited for breakfast or with an afternoon cup of coffee.

The batter is filled with the vibrant scents of orange, cinnamon, nutmeg and a hint of cloves. Dried cranberries add a sweet tartness to the spiced batter, while buttery pecans add a pleasant crunch. Once baked to a golden brown, this moist loaf of bread wafts it’s warm scents through your home, making you feel instantly cozy. The smell of freshly baked bread always brings me back to those memories of my grandfather baking bread for our Sunday dinner. I hope it can bring some of that homey feeling to you too!
