Lucy has been taking dance classes for over a year, and her very first recital is quickly approaching. I am far from being a dance mom – I usually sit in the corner with my kindle during class, sometimes reading and sometimes pretending to read while I listen to conversations around me.

I realize that this is ridiculous and antisocial, but what do you do. STOP TRYING TO CHANGE ME.

As it turns out, I underestimated how big of a thing these recitals are. It’s just a bunch of 3-year-olds dancing for like 2 minutes, right? How much fuss could there be?
WRONG.

I recently received a recital costume bill for $50. Between you and me, I am wondering what I’m supposed to do with this costume after she dances in it for two minutes but…whatever. I bought the costume.

Next I got an order form for recital photos. Well obviously, I’d be a horrible mom if I didn’t want a commemorative photo of my daughter at her first recital, so I dutifully filled out the form and enclosed a check. Done and done.

Actually, not.

As it turns out, there are also Recital Bears. Much like Build-a-Bears, they are overpriced bears that are wearing clothes. Apparently it is a tradition to gift these to the girls after the recital. Showing up to a recital empty handed IS NOT A THING. I have learned this.

Honestly, I thought the bear was bordering on ridiculous. But then I had visions of all the girls snuggling their bears post-recital, while my daughter stood on stage sobbing, a single rose wilting in her clutched fist. Fine. I ordered the bear.

As I sat at dance class the other day, pretending to read and silently stalking, the issue of the recital came up. Apparently make-up is also a thing, which is where I have to draw the line. It’s just all getting a little to Jon-Benet up in here, and I can’t stand for it.

While listening, I also discovered that NO ONE ELSE BOUGHT THE BEAR. Because this is what happens when you are the Antisocial Mom. You don’t get the bear memos. So what I’m saying is, if anyone needs a sequined toddler costume or a $50 bear wearing a tutu, kindly contact me. I’ll accept payment in the form of Flaming Hot Cheetos and boxed Pinot.

The weather here in Arkansas has been warming up and I’m looking forward to spending a lot of time in the backyard with friends! Cookouts and swim parties are my favorite, and these S’mores Hi Hat Cookies go perfectly with grilled burgers and yummy side dishes.

These cookies look fancy, but they are incredibly simple to whip up. The cookies are made with cake mix and the marshmallow frosting is a simple combination of egg whites and sugar. You’ll love these!

Ingredients

  • 1 box Chocolate Fudge Cake Mix
  • 3 large Egg
  • 1/2 cup Vegetable Oil
  • 1/2 cup Water
  • 6 large Egg White
  • 1 1/2 cups Granulated Sugar
  • 1 cup Semisweet Chocolate Chips
  • 3 tablespoons Vegetable Oil
  • 1 cup Graham Cracker Crumbs

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper and set aside.
  • In the bowl of a mixer, combine cake mix, eggs, oil, and water. Mix on medium low speed until combined.
  • Place small spoonfuls of batter (I used a very small cookie scoop) on lined baking sheet, several inches apart — they spread a lot!!
  • Bake for about 7 minutes, until edges are set and centers spring back when lightly touched.
  • Remove from oven and let cool on baking sheet for a few minutes. Remove to wire rack to finish cooling.
  • In a metal mixing bowl set over a pot of simmering water on the stove, whisk together egg whites and sugar until sugar seems to have melted and the mixture forms a syrup, about 10 minutes.
  • Remove from stove and set bowl on your mixer. Beat on high with the whisk attachment until it forms stiff peaks, about 10 minutes.
  • Using a large open-star tip, pipe marshmallow frosting on each cookie.
  • In a microwave-safe bowl, heat chocolate chips and vegetable oil for 2 minutes, stopping to stir every 20 seconds until chips are melted and mixture is smooth.
  • Spoon over frosted cookies, then immediately sprinkle with graham cracker crumbs.
