Nutella Pop Tarts Recipe

Nutella Pop Tarts are like eating pie for breakfast. And who can argue with that?

I'm a sucker for pop tarts. There's nothing quite like hand pies for breakfast. It feels like you're cheating while you're eating breakfast. I mean pie for breakfast? That's everything!! I mean who doesn't fantasize about eating pie for breakfast every day? I know I do. Pretty much every day.

I made some Easy Semi-Homemade Strawberry Pop Tarts last month. They turned out AMAZING! So I quickly became obsessed with all things pop tart. It was pop tart-apalooza around my house. All day, every day.

While I was obsessing about pop tarts I also became obsessed with Nutella. I hadn't used Nutella in a recipe in some time. Next thing you know it became "Nutella all the things" here. I slapped Nutella on everything. I mean "life goals", am I right?

Eons ago I made a Toll House Cookie Pizza with Nutella Ganache and Skor Toppings for the blog. It went a bit viral thanks to Buzzfeed recently, which is always fun.

It reminded me I should update the photos on that post, so I decided to remake the recipe. While I was remaking that one I whipped up a new one for food fanatic as well.

That recipe will be coming up next month. You're going to love it. But I'm going to be honest with you. All this Nutella ganache is not helping me get slim and trim. Not even a little.

Luckily it's worth indulging in and I happen to own a lot of stretchy pants. So I think it will be okay. I mean what's wrong with a little extra padding for winter, am I right?

Life is short, you have to live a little. A little Nutella ganache here and there is a good thing. It's a fun way to celebrate special mornings. Or just mornings in general.

We love making these for birthday breakfasts at our house. Fill them with Caramilk pieces, or Rolos, or any thing your heart desires. You'll love every bite.

So get out those stretchy pants, open a giant jar of Nutella and make this happen. Honestly I would double batch this sucker and go for broke. Who needs pants anyway? Live pants free. Eat Nutella. Every. Dang. Day.

Nutella Pop Tarts Recipe

    6 Servings

Ingredients

For the Pop Tarts:
  • 2 Refrigerated Pie Doughs, 1 package
  • 2 Caramilk Bars, Broken into squares
  • 1/2 cup Shredded Coconut, Optional
For the Nutella Ganache:
  • 3/4 cup Nutella
  • 1/2 cup Heavy Cream
For the Egg Wash:
  • 1 Egg
  • 1 tablespoon Water, Or milk
For the Garnish:
  • 1/4 cup Sprinkles
  • Powdered Sugar, Optional

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Line two cookie sheets with parchment paper. Set aside.
  3. Roll out both pie rounds with a rolling pin, you can use a tiny bit of flour to keep it from stick. I try to roll and manipulate the dough so it becomes a square. It's easier to cut the rectangle shapes if you can do that. If not, you'll just have some extra dough. You can use that make little pie dippers or shapes if you like.
  4. Use a pastry wheel or knife to cut as many rectangles as you can into the dough. You want them to be small enough to hold in your hand like a pop tart, but big enough to stuff 2 to 4 pieces of Caramilk in them.
  5. Place half the dough rectangles on the cookie sheet, spacing them about an inch or two apart. Place 2 to 4 pieces of Caramilk in the middle of each shape. If you want them to taste more like Samoas you can add a tablespoon of coconut to each one. I did it with half of mine.
  6. In a small bowl whisk the egg and the water (or milk) for the egg wash. Brush a small amount around the top edges of all the bottoms pieces of dough. This will help seal the pop tarts. You just want to brush it on lightly around the edges so when you pinch the dough it seals perfectly. Set the egg wash aside, you'll need it again.
  7. Now place the top pieces of dough over each piece and press down slightly with your hand to even it out a bit. Press the edges down with your fingers, then take a fork dusted with flour and press it down on the edges to seal each piece properly. You can use a pastry wheel to trim any uneven pieces.
  8. Now take a fork and poke a few holes in the tops of each pop tart. Brush the tops with the remaining egg wash, lightly.
  9. Place the cookie sheet in the oven, and bake for about 8 to 12 minutes, you want the top of them to turn a nice light golden brown. Remove from oven and repeat the process with the second cookie sheet.
  10. Allow tarts to cool slightly on the pan for a minute or two, then transfer to a cooling rack and let them cool completely.
  11. While they are cooling, it’s time to make the Nutella ganache.
  12. Scoop the Nutella into a medium size bowl. Set aside.
  13. In a heavy saucepan heat the heavy cream over medium heat until it just starts to bubble up nicely around the edges. Let it come to a boil then quickly pour it over top of the Nutella you placed in the bowl. Whisk until it starts to thicken. You can add more Nutella if you want it thicker, or you can add more heavy cream if you want it thinner. Everyone has different preferences so just roll with yours.
  14. Allow the ganache to cool quite a bit (3 to 5 minutes) then use an offset spatula to smooth the Nutella ganache over each pop tart. Toss some sprinkles over top while the ganache is still wet so they stick properly.
  15. Serve with a big old Nutella loving smile.

Notes

  • You can forgo the Nutella ganache and use powdered sugar over top of these as well. Or do a variety of each. That's what I like to do.
