What’s In a Hurricane?

Need to know what’s in a hurricane cocktail? Here’s everything you need to know to include this fun and refreshing drink on your next party menu!

If you’re looking for the perfect fruity cocktail for your next party, then you’ll need to know what’s in a Hurricane – that delightfully tropical drink that is a big favorite in New Orleans!

A Hurricane is basically a combination of dark and light rum, plus passion fruit and citrus juices (this recipe uses lime but you can use lemon instead).

It is served in a Hurricane glass – so called because it is the same shape as a hurricane lamp.

Where did the Hurricane come from?

The Hurricane was invented in Pat O’Brien’s bar in New Orleans, during World War II.

Stories of the reason for its creation are mixed – some say that O’Brien was forced to buy a particularly large supply of rum and made this cocktail in order to use it up. Others say it was made with rum because whiskey was in short supply at the time.

Whatever the reason, it proved to be a popular drink and is still enjoyed in Pat O’Brien’s bar today – and all over the rest of the Unted States too!

Can’t find passion fruit juice or nectar?

The one ingredient in this cocktail that can prove to be elusive is the passion fruit juice or nectar. The best solution if you can’t find any is to simply take the juice from a few ripe passion fruits.

To do this, cut the passion fruits in half and scoop out the flesh. Place it straight into a blender, along with some water (about 1/2 quart for 3 passion fruits) and sugar to taste.

Blend thoroughly until the seeds break up as much as possible, then strain before use.

How to make a simple syrup

This recipe calls for a simple syrup – which is (as its name suggests) very easy to make!

To prepare a batch of simple syrup for this and future recipes, just bring a cup of water to the boil in a small saucepan.

Add 2 cups of sugar and keep stirring until all the sugar has melted.

Then, lower the heat, cover and simmer for 10 minutes.

Remove from the heat and allow to cool. The mixture will thicken. Just pour it into a bottle and store in the refrigerator, where it will keep for up to one month.
