Just what is a Frappuccino?

Many people wonder exactly what a Frappuccino is, so don’t worry you aren’t alone!

Frappuccino is actually trademarked by Starbucks and, more often than not, does not contain any coffee.

Most Frappuccinos are a blend of milk, sugar, flavored syrups and whipped cream blended together with ice. Coffee flavors are usually added with coffee powders rather than a shot of espresso.

Frappes, on the other hand, tend to contain instant coffee, sugar, and water and are shaken until a frothy layer is formed. Some places serve frappes that are more similar to a Frappuccino but with the addition of ice cream.

Whilst some people use the terms frappe or milkshake interchangeably, there are differences. So you may end up getting a drink completely different than you expected, depending on where you go!

Starbucks Dark Mocha Frappuccino comes in at having nearly 3 ounces of sugar, making it a definite treat! To help cut back on sugar levels, this recipe uses a fat free chocolate syrup that you can make yourself.

You can bottle up this syrup and store it in the refrigerator to top ice cream and use in your homemade Frappuccinos. It will last for up to 6 weeks.

You can even make this a mocha sauce by replacing the water with coffee instead, perfect for topping the whipped cream you may use on your Frappuccino!

For the following Frappuccino recipe you can use either a tablespoon of instant coffee dissolved in hot water or two espresso shots.

We prefer espresso shots as they really gives a punch of coffee flavor, but if you prefer a more subtle taste, opt for the instant coffee option.
