The zesty tang of citrus fruits blends perfectly with bitter tequila and the sweetness of agave. Oh, and don’t forget the iconic salted rim to bring all of those flavors together!

While most cocktails get stuck into any old glass, margaritas have their own special glass - but why is that?

As with the margarita’s origins itself, there are a few different stories about the margarita glass origins too. One story is that a restaurant in Los Angeles ordered champagne glasses, but an odd batch were received instead; rather than sending them back, a bartender thought they could use those glasses for margaritas and charge a higher price as they were larger.

Another rather bizarre story is that its origin came from Marie Antoinette…and her left breast! Apparently, she wanted her lover to toast to her health by drinking from a glass that was the shape of her breast!

Regardless of its origin, the margarita glass has become iconic in the cocktail world, as it perfectly holds a large margarita, whether it be frozen or blended. A cocktail this heavenly deserves its own glass!

Frozen or on the rocks?

The toughest decision when it comes to a margarita!

Luckily, this recipe works well for either option, so you can try both if you like!

This recipe serves as the basis for a classic margarita, but you can get as creative as you like too; have you ever considered a jalapeño margarita, for example?

Spicy and delicious, this variation is perfect for those who like to walk on the wild side - but doesn’t include any wild directions, luckily!

Simply follow the main recipe below, but add thinly sliced rounds of jalapeño to the shaker - the more spice you like, the more rounds you should add!

Switch the sugar for syrup

While many recipes (including this one) call for granulated sugar, we find it creates a bitty texture that isn’t always that pleasant. Instead, we suggest simple syrup. It takes just a few minutes to whip up, but really makes a difference!

  1. In a saucepan, add 1 cup of sugar to 1 cup of water and stir well over medium heat.
  2. Stir until the sugar has dissolved. Allow the mixture to come to a boil and thicken into a syrup.
  3. Allow to cool before using in the margarita.

The syrup will keep for up to a month if stored sealed in a refrigerator.

Okay, back to the main recipe...
