Mrs. Fields chocolate chip cookies didn't get their legendary reputation for being the best chocolate chip cookies by accident. One bite of these copycat Chocolate Chip Cookies will have all of your friends asking for the million dollar secret ingredient!

...which is oatmeal, by the way. All ground up and mixed in with the flour. Who knew? And, of course, the other thing that makes these cookies what they are: high quality, real chocolate. Nothing else will do.

Obviously, Debbi Fields definitely knew what she was doing in the cookie kitchen. The woman was a cookie baking fiend and surprisingly savvy business maven. While I was doing my research for this recipe, I found myself constantly distracted by her story and clicking here and there to learn more about the crazy lady who wanted to make a living selling chocolate chip cookies.

That's what people thought about her when she first started out: that she was crazy. Her own husband even said that she couldn't sell $50 worth of cookies in her first day. When nobody came to her store on opening day, she bustled out into the streets with a tray of cookies and returned with a $75 profit! She, of course, continued to grow the business into a premier chain of sought-after franchises and sold them for a pretty good chunk of change in the 1990s.

I think I love her story so much because I see a little bit of my own story in it. The woman loved cookies and decided that was the career she wanted: cookies! She didn't take no for an answer and made her plan happen.

When I decided I needed a career, I tried to think about what I'd like to do more than anything if money didn't have to be a consideration... and the answer was: I wanted to eat dessert! People thought I was silly at first too. But now eating and blogging about dessert is my full time, paying gig!

Debbi once said, "I knew I loved making Cookies... and that was my business plan."

Although I have to admit, I can't think of possibly needing another chocolate chip cookie recipe ever again. I know it's cliche, but there is no other way to put this: these are the best chocolate chip cookies I've ever tasted!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 cups oatmeal, blended into a fine powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 24 ounces milk chocolate chips
  • 1 cup pecans

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Cream together the butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar.
  3. Once creamy, add the eggs, one at a time, mixing in between additions. Add the vanilla and mix.
  4. Mix in the flour, oatmeal powder, salt, baking powder, and baking soda. Only mix until the dough forms, careful not to over mix!
  5. Use a wooden spoon or a rubber spatula to mix in the chocolate chips and chopped pecans.
  6. Scoop dough onto an ungreased parchment or silicon lined baking sheet by rounded tablespoons, 2 inches apart to allow for spreading. Bake for 9-11 minutes until the edges are just barely golden. Let cool on baking sheet for 1-2 minutes before removing to wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

A bag of chocolate chips typically is comprised of 24 ounces.

Actually most bags of chocolate chips are 12 ounces.
