Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup All-Purpose Flour spooned and leveled
  • 1/4 cup Light Brown Sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 cup Granulated Sugar plus 2 tablespoons
  • 1 stick Unsalted Butter cold, cut into small cubes
  • 1 cup Old Fashioned Rolled Oats (not quick-cooking)
  • 48 ounces Apples such as Empire, Gala, or Braeburn, peeled, cored, and cut into 1/2-inch chunks
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh Lemon Juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
  • Mix together flour, brown sugar, salt, and 2 tablespoons granulated sugar in a large bowl.
  • Cut the butter into the flour, using a pastry blender or two knives, until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
  • Add the oats and - using your hands - squeeze and toss the mixture until it starts to form large clumps. Pop into the freezer to chill while you prepare your apples.
  • Toss the apples with the lemon juice, cinnamon, and remaining 1/2 cup granulated sugar in a large bowl.
  • Empty the apples into a shallow 2-quart baking dish, and cover them with the topping mixture.
  • Put the baking dish onto a rimmed baking sheet. Bake for around 55 to 65 minutes, until the Apple Crisp is bubbling and golden.
  • Allow to cool for 10 minutes before serving.
