Quinoa Upma

Have you tried quinoa cooked in an Indian style? In this recipe Quinoa is cooked in a traditional south Indian style with lots of curry leaves, mustard seeds, veggies and peanuts. This quinoa based healthy version of Indian Upma is an ideal “quick to prepare lunch” and a “perfect box meal” for picnics or a full day of work.


  • 1 cup Quinoa (preferably white (mixed color also works great))
  • 1 Small Onion (fine chopped)
  • 1 green chili (fine chopped)
  • 1/4 Bell Pepper (red or green) (fine chopped)
  • 1 tea spoon Chana dal
  • 1 tea spoon White Urad dal
  • 1/2 inch ginger (peeled and fine chopped)
  • 1 tea spoon Mustard seeds
  • 1/4 tea spoon cinnamon powder
  • 1/4 tea spoon Garam masala
  • 1/2 tea spoon Jeera powder
  • 1 sprig Curry leaves
  • 1 tea spoon Sugar (or honey)
  • Salt to taste
  • 2-3 table spoon coriander leaves (fine chopped)
  • Handfull of Peanuts (fried or roasted)
  • 2 table spoon Ghee
