Ryan Nadolny | Ryan Eats Everything

Summer is long over, the leaves are falling, and full-flavored fall beers have taken over. Check out our favorite picks for the best fall beers for 2022.

One of the things about fall that excites me the most is the beer! There’s just something about those autumn flavors like cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, apple, and fresh peach, that makes my tastebuds do a little dance.

Whether you are pairing with food or curled up in front of a bonfire with your boo, there’s a craft brew for everyone. Yes, even for you PSL lovers.

Quite a bit has happened to the world of fall beers since Samuel Adams Octoberfest reigned supreme. Check out this list and give a few a try! I think you may just find yourself pleasantly surprised.

Best Fall Beers 2022

Below you'll find 12 of the best fall beers for fall 2022. Provided pricing is for informational purposes. Local retail pricing may vary depending on location.

Hacker Pschorr Oktoberfest

$8.99 (6-Pack)

One of the most recognizable styles is an Oktoberfest, also known as a Märzen. It is typically brewed in March so it’s ready in time for fall festivals.

This Bavarian beverage sets the standard for a Märzen style brew. Light transparent amber color with medium hops, and a smooth mouth feel that finishes crisp and clean.

Dogfish Head: Punkin Ale

$12.99 (6-Pack)

No fall beer list would be complete without at least one pumpkin brew. Don’t you know it’s pumpkin everything before the first leaf even drops?!

Packing a punch with a 7.0% ABV, this beer is smooth and easy to drink, while boasting flavors of pumpkin and hints of brown sugar.

If you’re familiar with the Punkin Chunkin festival in Delaware, then you’ll know where this beer get’s its name.

Founders Brewing Company: Breakfast Stout

$8.79 (6-Pack)

This isn't exactly a fall beer, as it’s actually available year-round, but after one sip you’ll understand why it’s on this list and perfect for fall sipping.

There is no beer that I love more than this heavy stout with subtle notes of cinnamon, bold coffee aromas, with bitter and sweetened imported chocolate.

It pairs exceptionally well with sweet and earthy foods, like maple brown sugar bacon. A good beer + bacon = my love language.

Founders Brewing Company: Oktoberfest

$17.49 (12-Pack)

Another amazing offering from Michigan-based Founders Brewing Company is their Oktoberfest. It is a fall classic and a favorite among favorites.

Using imported German hops and malts to give a rich amber/ copper color with an explosion of hops and a smooth, slightly sweet finish.

Ground Breaker: Olallie Blackberry Rose Hip Ale

$11.99 (4-Pack)

For those that follow a gluten-free diet, beer is usually one of the first things you have to cut out, with the noted exception of hard ciders.

The great thing about Ground Breaker is that all of their beer is brewed in a dedicated gluten-free brewery, meaning there's no risk of contamination.

This brew is light, only slightly bitter, but full flavors of blackberry and citrus. It’s bright and slightly hoppy and a nice transition from the usual fall beer lineup.

Angry Orchard Hard Core Dark Cherry Cider

$10.99 (6-Pack)

Sticking with the gluten-free theme as the one before, this cider goes down ridiculously smooth. Angry Orchard fans will love this dark cherry variety.

It’s as sweet as it is tart, yet very well rounded and balanced. Most cider beers are naturally gluten-free, but it’s always best to double check before consuming.

Samuel Adams Octoberfest

$8.99/12.99 (6/12-Pack)

Sam Adams, in my humble opinion, is the beer that got most of us into craft beers, which is why Samuel Adams Octoberfest has to be included on this list.

Long before every town had five breweries, Sam Adams was there for us as a premium domestic beer. Octoberfest was the first of its kind in the U.S. in 1971.

Full of rich caramel notes with a smooth, sweet, slightly hoppy flavor, this is a classic fall brew with wide appeal, plus it's easy to find just about anywhere.

There may be subjectively “better” Oktoberfest beers out there, but I will always give a nod to Sam Adams.

Southern Tier Cold Press Coffee Pumking NITRO

$13.99 (4-Pack)

This American double/Imperial stout from Southern Tier is everything you pumpkin-spice-latte-loving folk could ever ask for in a seasonal fall brew.

Rocking an 8.3% ABV, this beer isn’t messing around. It packs full cold pressed coffee flavor with creamy notes of pumpkin, clove, and a little nutmeg.

Go ahead and have one with your breakfast. I won’t tell anyone! (But watch out for that ABV and drink responsibily.)

Boulevard Tank 7 Farmhouse Ale

$13.49 (6-Pack)

Not every fall beer needs to be heavy. In fact, some of the more popular varieties are farmhouse/saison style beers like the Tank 7 Farmhouse Ale.

Tank 7 Ale, which gets its name simply from Tank #7 at the brewery, is a citrus heavy brew with peppercorn, sweet grain, and grassy hop aromas, with lemon, black pepper, and clove flavors.

This one is one of my favorites - it is truly a wonderful beer for early fall.

Old Nation M-43

$10.99 (4-Pack)

While not exactly intended as a fall beer, Old Nation M-43 tastes surprisingly perfect on those fall days when the weather changes rapidly even hour to hour.

A traditional Northeastern IPA (NEIPA) that is easily enjoyed on a hot day or a cool one, with tangy grapefruit flavors, big hops, and a touch of pineapple for a slightly sweet finish.

Left Hand Milk Stout Nitro

$11.79 (6-Pack)

Left Hand is the gold standard among milk stouts. Just a slight whiff and you’ll notice the coffee and chocolate aromas.

Upon your first sip you’re greeted with a creamy texture and vanilla notes. The finish is smooth with a slight nuttiness and more coffee notes.

Founders All-Day IPA

$15.09 (15-Pack)

Last but not least, we decided to go with another beer available year-round. With fall comes football. With football comes tailgating. (And game day snacks!)

Heavy beers that weigh you down are no fun during a party when you'll likely be sipping all day - with a 4.7% ABV, you won’t get knocked out by two beers.

Complex malts and hops give this beer a piney fresh flavor with big citrus notes, making this an easy drinker for any occasion.
