11 Favorite Oatmeal Recipes You Need to Make for Breakfast

Yum

I was taught from a very young age that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Often, that consisted of instant oatmeal and some toast or fresh fruit.

There was just something about the bowl of mush that never appealed to me though. It being heated in the microwave only added to the despair.

Somehow it was scalding hot and cold at the same time. No thanks. Nobody loves that first thing in the morning.

Many years later I would discover homemade oatmeal and never look back. Since that day, I have discovered a plethora of delicious oatmeal recipes, several of which I'm sharing with you here.

They are far from that hot/cold bowl I had before school. Nope, these oatmeal breakfast recipes I can get behind enthusiastically.

What Is the Origin of Oatmeal?

That’s a question that will get you many different answers. Let’s just say they have been cultivated and eaten all over the world for thousands and thousands of years.

Oats come from the cereal plant and go through an extensive process of de-husking, steaming, drying, and rolling flat.

The oats are then used in a variety of products like animal feed and even skin care products and, of course, delicious oatmeal recipes.

Different cultures use other grains and corn to make dishes similar to oatmeal such as grits, hominy, polenta, or porridge.

Health Benefits of Oatmeal

In addition to being delicious and super versatile, the health benefits of oatmeal are nothing to sneeze at either.

Along with being loaded with healthy bacteria and antioxidants (yes, really), there's also research that shows that oatmeal may:

  • Help lower blood sugar levels
  • Contribute to colon health
  • Increase gut health
  • Relieve constipation
  • Lend to satiation which may aid in weight management

Our Favorite Oatmeal Breakfast Recipes

Ok, so we're all sold on the oatmeal thing now right? Here are 11 of our favorite oatmeal recipes for breakfast.

Some of these easily double as snacks or healthier dessert options, too, so eat up!

1. Oatmeal Raisin Rice Krispie Treats Recipe

This delectable recipe for our oatmeal raisin Rice Krispie Treats is a spin on the classic sweet treat. With the added raisins and oats, you can justify all the marshmallows! These gooey bars won’t last long. You could always do what I did and make a second batch using dried cranberries instead of raisins. The trick is to hide the second batch for yourself. You deserve it!

2. Gluten Free Peanut Butter Fudge Balls Recipe

This recipe doesn’t contain any chocolate. You read that correctly. This fudge ball recipe doesn’t even have fudge! Old me would’ve laughed at the thought of a gluten free, dairy free, vegan fudge ball. To my surprise, these little snack bombs were good! Perfectly sweetened by the bananas, you almost forget you’re eating healthy. I say almost because nothing beats homemade fudge! I think you’ll be pleasantly stunned by their deliciousness.

3. Raspberry Apple Baked Oatmeal Recipe

Baked oatmeal is one of my favorite ways to eat oatmeal. Whether you’re running out the door and need something portable or sitting down to enjoy it with your coffee, this raspberry apple baked oatmeal recipe fits both scenarios. It’s similar to a granola bar, just a little softer. Try it with different types of fruit!

4. Sugar Free Gluten Free Oatmeal Carrot Muffins with Garam Masala

This recipe for oatmeal carrot muffins took some time to wrap my brain around. It’s gluten free, dairy free, and sugar free. It’s actually just air! I’m kidding of course. These muffins are considerably more savory than they are sweet and they are super tasty. They pair well with my morning coffee.

5. Toaster Oven Baked Oatmeal Recipe

Much like the previous baked oatmeal recipe, this is perfect for those on the go. The pecans give a nice crunch, while the maple syrup and vanilla extract add the perfect amount of sweetness. The best part is it comes together in practically no time and utilizes your toaster oven which I think makes it slightly firmer than using your standard oven.

6. Chocolate Chip Banana Oatmeal Muffins Recipe

This chocolate chip banana oatmeal muffin recipe speaks my language - chocolate! These muffins are still quite healthful thanks to the bananas replacing some of sugar and other fats. These are a favorite in our family.

7. Spiced Zucchini Oatmeal Bites Recipe

Generally speaking, I try to avoid sweet treats that contain vegetables. Vegetables are for dinner. Sweets are for the anxiety. However, I was fooled by these tasty bites. What I thought was going to taste like tree bark, ended up being little explosions of flavor! I admit it, I was wrong. You'll love this spiced zucchini oatmeal bites recipe.

8. Cookie Dough Protein Oatmeal Recipe

Cookie dough. Do I need to say more?! This protein oatmeal recipe will quickly become a breakfast staple. And it’s ready in 10 minutes. It’s hot and gooey and sweet and addicting! I want this for every cold wintery morning. (This, for the record, is nothing like the oatmeal of my youth.)

9. Oatmeal Raisin No Bake Granola Bars Recipe

Who doesn’t love a good no-bake recipe?! That’s my kind of recipe. These oatmeal raisin granola bars come together in practically no time. The hardest part is letting them cool before you slice them up and go to town! That said, they make a perfect make ahead breakfast on the go, which is always a win in our family.

10. Oatmeal Breakfast Bars Recipe

This recipe has it all; peanut butter, chocolate, vanilla, and coconut. What more can you ask for? And they’re protein heavy with a low amount of sugar, making them a healthy snack for any time of the day. These oatmeal breakfast bars are definitely one of my favorite ways to eat oatmeal for breakfast.

11. Chocolate Coconut Overnight Oats Recipe

I'll be honest and admit - I love overnight oats. This chocolate coconut overnight oats recipe is the ultimate no-fail recipe. Mix, cover, refrigerate (overnight, of course), consume. That’s it. You did it and never even broke a sweat. Make a bunch up for the week and you’re set!
