This dish is very similar to Salisbury Steak, but there are a few slight differences between the two.

Salisbury steak typically makes use of more fillers, such as breadcrumbs, eggs, onions and a range of seasonings - making it somewhat closer to a meatball! It is usually served with potatoes, noodles, rice or even a salad.

Hamburger Steak, on the other hand,  does not usually contain all of those fillers and is generally composed of just meat, salt and pepper! You can, of course, add whatever seasonings you like to enhance the flavor.

Unlike Salisbury Steak, Hamburger Steak is normally served on a bun. This recipe, however, produces a heartier dinner and is ideal if you are looking for a low-carb dinner option.

The final difference is that the Salisbury Steak recipe originated in the US, whereas the Hamburger Steak originated in Hamburg, Germany!

This recipe requires you to make your patties from scratch, but don't worry, it is much easier than you think!

Choosing the ground beef for your Hamburger Steak

The type of ground beef you use in your recipe plays a big part in influencing the flavor and texture of the finished dish.

The fattier the ground beef you buy, the more flavor that you can expect. The fat also provides your patties with moisture, which is just what you want in this recipe. It ensures that they are both beautifully tender and bursting with flavor.

Beef chuck, with a 20-25% fat content is typically the best ground beef for this recipe!

Time saving tip

To get dinner on the table even faster on busy weeknights, why not make up a large batch of patties ahead of time and freeze them? You can easily make several pounds of ground beef into patties for future use, so you'll always have some on hand if you need them in a hurry!

Hamburger Steak and Gravy

    4 Servings

Ingredients

  • 1 pound Ground Beef
  • 1 large Egg
  • 3 tablespoons Breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Onion Powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Paprika
  • 1 pinch of Kosher Salt
  • 1 pinch of Freshly Ground Black Pepper
  • 2 tablespoons Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • 2 tablespoons Butter
  • 8 ounces Baby Portabello Mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 small Yellow Onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons All-Purpose Flour
  • 1 1/2 cups Low-Sodium Beef Broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Fresh Thyme

Directions

  1. Create your patties by combining the beef, egg, breadcrumbs, garlic powder, onion powder and paprika and season with salt and pepper. Using your hands will allow you to work the meat and ensure all of the ingredients are well combined. Then, divide your patty mixture into four and press down on them to flatten until they are about half an inch thick.
  2. Heat your oil in a skillet and cook the patties until they are golden on each side and cooked through, about 6-8 minutes per side. Remove them from the skillet and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, melt your butter and add in the mushrooms and onions; cook them for abut 5 minutes until they are soft. Sprinkle in the flour and mix it into the onions and mushrooms, followed by whisking in the broth, Worcestershire sauce and thyme.
  4. Bring the gravy mixture to a boil and reduce the heat to a gentle simmer; allow it to simmer for about five minutes until the gravy has thickened. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
  5. Place the patties back into the skillet and spoon the sauce over the patties and cook until they have warmed all the way through.
  6. Serve with mashed potatoes and peas, or a side salad if you are watching carbs!
