Variations

Because this recipe is so straightforward, it's very easy to adapt to suit your tastes - or to create several different flavor combinations for variety!
Here are some ideas:
  • Use a white cake mix with vanilla frosting and a white chocolate coating

  • Use peanut butter instead of melted chocolate for your coating
  • Use a pumpkin cake mix with a  cream cheese frosting and white chocolate coating
  • Use a strawberry cake mix with strawberry frosting and white chocolate coating
You can also make seasonal variations - for example, add heart shaped sprinkles for Valentine's Day, stars for Christmas or you could even add some googly eyes and create Cake Pop Critters!
When you think about it, there are dozens of combinations you could try!

Tips for making cake pops

  • If you don't have a food processor, you can crumble the cooked cake using a fork instead
  • This recipe asks you to refrigerate the cake pops before dipping them in chocolate - do not miss this step! It's much harder to roll them if the mixture isn't cold enough.
  • If you don't have a styrofoam block to stand your cake pops in as they dry, use a thick carboard box instead.

Cake pops as gifts

Because they are so versatile, cake pops make wonderful gifts (you could create white ones with blue sprinkles to give after the birth of a baby boy, for example).
To make them look really special, why not pop a few into a lollipop treat bag? You can then secure it with a pretty bow that suits your theme!

Easy Cake Pop Recipe

      40 Servings

Ingredients

  • 1 box Chocolate Cake Mix, prepared according to directions on package
  • 2 Eggs, or as required for your cake mix
  • 1/3 cup Oil, or as required by your cake mix
  • 1 can Frosting
  • 7 ounces Chocolate

Directions

  1. Bake the cake according to the instructions on the package. Allow to cool fully.
  2. Using a food processor, crumble the cake and pour it into a mixing bowl.
  3. Add 1/2 can of frosting and - using your hands - combine the mixture until it forms a dough.
  4. Using a small cookie scooper, form the mixture into small balls.
  5. Melt 2 oz of the chocolate in the microwave in 20 second bursts, stirring in between each burst, until smooth.
  6. For every cake pop, dip a lollipop stick into the melted chocolate, then push about half way into the cake ball.
  7. Put the cake pops in the fridge for one hour.
  8. Melt the rest of the chocolate and use it to coat the cake pops one by one - be sure to rotate them so they are covered on all sides.
  9. Push the coated cake pops into a styrofoam block to hold them up, then add sprinkles or any other desired topping before the chocolate sets.
