Homemade fresh tomato pizza sauce is made with simple ingredients but has all the full flavor. You’ll feel so good after trying this that you won’t ever go back to sauce in a jar.

So you know how I am always on the forever quest to eliminate canned products from my life? Well, pizza sauce has never made that list even though we make homemade pizzas at least once a week.

I’ve been reluctant about making fresh tomato pizza sauce mostly because I didn’t think it would turn out well and partially out of laziness. I had also finally found a winner jar sauce that made things super easy.

No more. If I can help it, I intend to make fresh tomato pizza sauce all the time.

This recipe both works well and is super easy to make. So, there is really no excuse except that you do need some time for it to cook.

The good news is that most of this is just simmer time on the stove, so you can spend that same time prepping your dough or just relaxing with your glass of Chianti.

But wait, it gets even better! This recipe is so good that everyone in the family commented on how good it tasted. And it wasn’t even tomato season yet!

I can’t imagine how awesome this is going to taste once we get to the peak of tomato season.

This recipe only uses fresh tomatoes and a few simple spices. A lot of fresh tomato pizza sauce recipes require you to chop up other veggies too.

While that may make for a heartier sauce, I find it unnecessary since I load my pizza with veggie toppings anyway.

If you just want a simple pizza sauce that tastes good, this is it. Don’t forget, you can always make an extra-large batch and freeze it in small portions.

This would be just as easy as pulling out that jar from your pantry! So if you have pizza making plans coming up, give this recipe a go!

Fresh Tomato Pizza Sauce Recipe

    4 Servings

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon Olive Oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon Crushed Red Pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Minced Garlic
  • 4 large Fresh Tomatoes, diced
  • 1 teaspoon Oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Granulated Sugar

Directions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Lower the heat to medium and add the crushed red pepper and garlic. Stir for about 1 minute being careful not to let the garlic burn.
  2. Add remaining ingredients and stir occasionally until the mixture begins to bubble.
  3. Lower the heat and let the mixture simmer uncovered for 1 hour.
  4. Remove the mixture from heat and allow it cool.
  5. Using a small food processor or immersion blender, puree the mixture until smooth.

Notes

  • Depending on your stove and tomatoes, you may need to let it simmer for longer. The longer it simmers, the thicker the sauce. Look for most of the liquid to be evaporated.
  • Makes about 1 cup of sauce which is enough to generously cover 1 large pizza.
